Kenya’s Bandari edged out Central Tanzania’s Singida by a solitary goal at the Taifa Stadium, Dar es Salaam, to book their place in the semi-final of the Sportpesa Cup 2019. The lone goal for the Dockers came in the 68th minute via a spot-kick after a handball by Singida fullback in the penalty area. Lethal Ugandan international, William Wadri, stepped up and sent the Singida goalie the wrong direction. Bandari, who are second in the Sportpesa Premier League, seem to have exported their good run of form in the domestic league into the competition as they seemed hardly troubled by a rather lame Singida who lie 15th in Tanzanian Premier League.

In an evenly balanced encounter, Singida looked the stronger team especially in the first half with their dangerous counter-attacks which met with equally good saves from Farouk the Bandari custodian. The best chance of the half for Bandari was when Abdallah Hassan was able to get into a one-on-one position with the goalie only for him to botch his shot wide of the target.

The ports men applied pressure from the onset of the second half and their efforts were rewarded with a penalty after a shot on goal was handled by the Singida full back as he struggled to clear the ball. After William Wadri’s goal, Bandari were under a spell of heavy pressure from the Tanzanians who dominated the possession as they sought to take the game to extra-time but to no avail. At the full-time whistle, it was the Kenyan Coastal team that was all smiles as they progress to the semis as Singida bow out of the competition.

Bandari will play either Simba SC in the semi-finals.

MAN OF THE MATCH: WILLIAM WADRI
